Tomorrow’s #FridayFreebie is 2004’s “Blackness”.
In 2003, when I was recording with my friend, Jamie, we were experimenting. He would lay down a drum loop, and I would jam on top of it for about 10 minutes. Then we would go through and pick out the good riffs, and chop them up into a song. We did all of this at his house in Brooklyn, which meant about a 45 minute ride for me, from Queens, on the BQE (and anyone who knows that highway knows what a horrible ride that can be).
One day I was listening to Slayer’s Seasons in the Abyss album on my ride and “War Ensemble” came on. When I arrived at Jamie’s, I said, “I want to do this!”
Now, I am by no means a guitar player anywhere equal to Hanneman or King, but I knew the basic riff. Also, we had been doing Goth and Industrial type of music to this point. So, “Blackness” is what we came up with.
