Well, gear heads, here is your look into the wide world of The Raygun Girls' drumming. True, we do use a computer and true, we do use some sampled sounds and loops. But out there on stage, you get a guy, tried and true, bashing away on the best gear on the planet. Here's a look into what I use on tour.

Drum set: Only Pearl Reference. These babies are smartly engineered, and totally the best made drums out there. For The Raygun Girls, I use the following sizes (diameter x depth):

  • 10x8 (4 outer plies of maple, 2 inner plies of birch; 45-degree bearing edge) rack tom
  • 12x9 (6- ply maple; 45-degree bearing edge) rack tom
  • 15x13 (suspended) (4 outer plies of maple, 2 inner plies of African mahogany; fully-rounded bearing edge)
  • 18x16 (floor tom with legs) (4 outer plies of maple, 2 inner plies of African mahogany; fully-rounded bearing edge)
  • 22x16 virgin kick drum.(2 outer plies of maple, 6 inner plies of African mahogany; fully-rounded bearing edge)
Snares vary, depending on the room, the intent and the producer, but I have been favoring a 6.5x14 brass Sensitone II main snare and a little 5x12 side snare for those jungle beats we do.

Cymbals: These are very personal instruments. And I (unlike other artists) vary the manufacturer depending on the specific cymbal for the job.

Hi-hats, I have 2 sets:

  • On my left, I use 13" A Zildjian New Beat top on a 13" A Zildjian Mastersound bottom.
  • On the right, near my ride cymbal, I have a pair of 1980's era 15" A Zildjian hats.

Crashes, all Zildjian, go from my left to right:

  • 19" A Custom medium crash
  • 18" K Custom Dark
  • 17" K Custom Dark.

My ride cymbals are Paiste or Zildjian and depend on the room:

  • 22" Twenty series medium ride (B20 bronze)
  • 22" Dark Metal ride (Signature bronze)
  • 20" 1970's A Zildjian & Cie (K Zildjian bronze lathed like an old A) ride

Effects:

  • 18" Wuhan Lion cymbal at my 11 o'clock position
  • 19" Sabian Paragon china between the floor toms
  • Custom-made "Ribbon Crasher" made from recycled cymbals at 1 o'clock position

Hardware: A Pearl ICON rack system holds it all up with a few Tama holders.

Pedals: Drum Workshop, rebuilt by my buddy Lewy Stix. I use a double DW5002 Accelerator pedal refurbished with new bearings and hinges, but it uses the old single-chain drive, sandblasted foot boards and bumblebee yellow base plates. I also have a single pedal like this too. My Hi-hat is the same idea: an older generation DW5000 2-leg stand with a shortened top rod.

Throne: Round or bicycle seat, I use Pork Pie thrones. The bicycle seat is silver sparkle with a leopard top and the round is black sparkle with a leopard top.

Sticks: Pro-Mark.

  • My own design, a prototype Doc MacNab stick, oak with a ball tip, .531" and 16.25" long
  • Hickory 808: .579" and 16" long with a nylon ball tip.

Cases: When I lived locally, I used mostly Protection Racket bags. Now, since I have to travel, I have both SKB and XL Specialty's Protechtor cases. My sticks travel in a yellow Zildjian Dennis Chambers stick bag.

Shoes: all-black Converse "Chuck Taylor" All-Stars.

There you go! From the wide world of drumming, I have been your host: Doc MacNab. Stay tuned for more to come...... !
